Feile na Bealtain Music and Arts Festival

This year Féile na Bealtaine 2021 will take place! - and we will be real, not online!

But we are turning Féile Inside Out!
Agus b’fhéidir bun os cionn chomh maith!

In a year where we have gone contactless we are finding new ways to connect – with each other, with our place, and with things we have almost forgotten.
Táimid bunaither and lonaithe san áit seo agus beidh ceangailt idir na háiteanna and na h-ealaíontóirí áitiula thar aon rud eile i mbliana.

Connecting our community has always been a pivotal focus in our festival planning. We have grown from a small community festival into a celebration of life filling gently back in. national multi-disciplinary arts festival. This year due to COVID -19 pandemic we will return back to a very local community festival celebrating and appreciating our local artists, musicians and heritage on the Dingle Peninsula.

More than ever we value the importance of community bonding, support and the Dingle Peninsula. More than ever we value the importance of community bonding, support and the celebration of life filling gently back in.

This year like no other we will be welcoming in the summer!

Marking May bank holiday

Firstly over the May Bank Holiday weekend enjoy a creative visual feast rich in culture, keeping the festival cauldron burning.

Props from the street parade will be found in unusual places. A beautiful community bunting project, Ar Scáth a Chéile, will decorate our peninsula.

Art exhibitions will light up shop windows and outdoor spaces. Hilltop fires will signal the onset of summer. Church bells will fill the silence. Poetry will ring out in shops and on streets

We have put together visual art, spoken word and photographic celebration on giant video screens which will be placed in locations, and run in such was so as not to gather large crowds.

Ni bheidh daoine ag teacht le chéile i ngrúpaí dos na himeachtaí seo.

Cuid a 2 -

When 15 or more may Gather Together then Shall you find us....

In late May or early June – at the very first opportunity – when 15 or more people are allowed to gather outdoors, Féile na Bealtaine will host a really exciting series of outdoor multi-disciplinary events in locations around the peninsula.

These events will feature music, song, dance, literature, poetry, stories, geology, archaeology and art. They will reflect a dialogue between arts practitioners, and their response to our many beautiful and evocative locations.

They will be strictly controlled audience numbers unfortunately, however we will create video and audio remnants that will be left, on location, for future passersby to wonder at …. seo

Artist Statement

I’m a sculptor based in the Dingle area of county Kerry. I work with used and old materials recycling them into works of art which are relevant to our contemporary culture of the 21st century. The subject matter for my art varies and includes figurative, portrait and animal sculptures. My sculptures often involve new interpretations on classical artworks, like ‘Le Poete’ which is based on Rodin’s bronze sculpture, The Thinker.

I combine materials in my work, often from cars, motorbikes and bicycles. I’m constantly exploring new ways to use different materials. We often fail to appreciate the great ingenuity and creativity of engineers. Functional metal products, like brake discs or motorbike chains have an innate sculptural aesthetic.  I want to showcase this creativity by using these everyday items in my sculptures. My long-term vision is to popularize a genre of environmental art, defined by its mediums, topic matter, and accessibility to engage with. I seek to create artworks that can be appreciated by everyone, from a small child to an old art critic.

I am currently working on a series of sculptures based on the old Irish coinage that depict many of the wonderful animals found in Ireland. This project has been kindly sponsored by Ealaín na Gaeltachta.

Cnoc a’ Chairn: Ag Cuimhne agus Athshamhlú

Cnoc a’ Chairn: Remembering and Reimagining.

“Ceal Shíonáí ceart d’ár gcuid féin/ Dheineamar scrios ar na cnoic …. / Chun go mbeadh fásach againn/ Oiriúnach d’ár gcomhrá le dia.”

Tugaimid cuireadh díbh cuairt a thabhairt ar Chnoc a’ Chairn inár dteannta chun cuimhneamh agus athshamhlú. Raghaimid ar dtús go dtí Reilig an Ghorta, atá ina cillín – láthair adhlactha do leanaí gan baisteadh – chomh maith. Ansan, siúlfam amach píosa beag ar choimín an chnoic, chun machnamh air mar áit fhiain. Tá an talamh garbh agus níor mór bróga téagartha a chaitheamh.

We invite you to visit Cnoc a’ Chairn with us to remember and reimagine. We will first visit the Famine Graveyard, which is also a cillín, or burial place for unbaptized children. Then we will walk a little way out onto the commons of the mountain and think about it’s wildness. The ground is rough and sturdy footware should be worn.

We have challenged poets, dancers, musicians, thinkers and artists from the watershed of Cnoc a’ Chairn to explore and celebrate this upland owned by all: The Commons of Dingle. The famine graveyard is a touch-stone for this meditation, with music from Eoin Duignan. Images of our naked hillside selves, animal encounters, visions of the future are explored in the scraggy, boggy flesh.

The feral bilingual poetry of Simon O Faoláin probes the wonder of these barren uplands, imagining encounters with wildness within and without. Zoë Uí Fhaoláin responds to the place with performance and artwork and delivers Paddy Bushe’s English translations of the poems. We evoke of images of future hilltops with Darach ó Murchú and remember past lives in song with Iarfhlaith Ó Murchú

“Craobhscaoileadh beo ó Chnoc a’ Chairn:/ Dubhluachra na bliana imithe tharainn.”
