Baineann mo chuid oibre leis an tírdhreach, an tuiscint, an tsamhlaíocht agus an neamhchinnteacht.

Dírím isteach ar dhromchla na farraige agus na habhann sa saothar seo, ar an bplána sin nó an tairseach sin ina gcastar an ní substaintiúil agus an ní neamhshubstaintiúil le chéile. Tá cosúlacht, dar liomsa, idir an siosarnach a bhíonn idir dúil an aer agus an uisce ar thaobh amháin leis an siosarnach a bhíonn idir tuiscint agus samhlaíocht ar an taobh eile.

Tá an fharraige, ar aon dul leis an tuiscint sa mhéid is go bhfuil sé dochinnte – dochinnte ó thaobh fairsinge, méid agus nádúir. Cosúil leis an bhfarraige agus leis an abhainn, bíonn an tuiscint bheo ag athrú de shíor. Tá amhras agus éiginnteacht, ceistiúchán agus bréagnú, anuas ar an mbealach ina n-oibríonn siad ar ár n-aithne orainn fhéin, lárnach sa saothar seo.

Tá gach rud san áireamh anseo seachmallach, neamhchinnte nó neamhshubstaintiúil. Tá na scáil uilig ar an bhfarraige mealltach. Is faoi ‘áit’ (mo cheantar féin) an saothar seo, ach in ainneoin sin, níl aon tagairt ann don áit ná don léaslíne ina bhfuilimid tar éis sinn féin a lonnú; níl suíomh na n-íomhanna inchinntithe.

My work is concerned with landscape, perception, the imagination and indeterminacy.

With this work I focus on the surface of the sea and a river, on that plane or threshold where the substantial and insubstantial meet. For me the dialogue that occurs between the two elements of air and water resembles the dialectic of the physical world on our perception and imagination.

The sea, like perception, is in essence indeterminate – uncertain in extent, amount, or nature. Like the sea or a river, living perception is in constant flux.

This work is concerned with doubt and ambiguity, questioning and contradictions, and how they can play with our sense of being.

Everything in the equation here is an illusion, or is uncertain or insubstantial. The reflections on the water are all illusory.

The work is about ‘place’, (my locality), yet in contradiction to that, there is no reference to the land or horizon in which to position ourselves; the locations of the images are not determinable. In fact my objective is for the viewer to become aware of his or her own imaginative response and cycles of perception to the landscape around us.
