Kíla have been vanguards of Trad Fusion since they formed in 1987. Since then they have released 21 Albums, co-written scores for 3 Oscar nominated Animation films, traveled to 35 countries, playing at some of the worlds biggest festivals and collaborated with artists, dancers, circus performers, classical quartets, opera singers and choirs of all sorts, samba and african drummers and latterly an 8 piece brass ensemble with whom they recorded their latest album Raise the Road.
Spanning 5 decades, 2 centuries and 2 millenia (1987-2026), Dublin septet Kíla have been vanguards of Trad-fusion since they began. Such is the multi-faceted nature of their music that they’ve performed at Jazz, Rock, Celtic and World Music festivals in 35 countries on 5 continents; They’ve released 21 CDs, co-composed music for 3 Oscar and Annie nominated animation films and composed Emmy nominated, IFTA and Greison winning scores. While rooted in Irish Trad, their music has absorbed influences from a multitude of other genres such as Latin, Reggae, Rock, Funk, Jazz, Classical and World Music in general.
Kíla have performed and/or recorded with Irish luminaries such as U2, Sinéad O’Connor, Shane McGowan, The Dubliners, Mary Coughlan, Imelda May, Glen Hansard, Mundy, Dónal Lunny; International luminaries such as The Rolling Stones’ Ronnie Wood, India’s Zakir Hussain, Poland’s Kaya and Japan’s Oki Kano. Kíla have collaborated with Quartets, Opera Singers, Choirs, Samba Bands, West African style drummers, Belly, Ballet, Step and Contemporary dancers and an enviable array of Circus performers. Raise The Road (2025) is Kíla’s most recent release. Here we hear them blending their music with an 8 piece brass band scored by one of Ireland’s rising brass stars the Tombonist and Brass Arranger Paul Frost.
