A talk on the recent research into the role sweathouses (i.e. old saunas) played in Irish society.
Archaeological findings have shown that from the Bronze Age (Fullacht Fias) up until the mid 1800’s people on the island used heat exposure in sweat houses as a therapeutic and possibly recreational activity.
With the emergence of saunas popping up along our coastlines, this talk will provide a brief history of its use, decline and re-emergence in Irish society.
Sea dip and 1 hour sauna will follow.
